Why apparently similar products can differ

Botanical extracts and other natural-health ingredients are complex. Plant species and part, geography, harvest conditions, extraction solvent, standardisation, excipients, stability and manufacturing controls can all influence the final product.

Probiotics are strain-specific; minerals differ in chemical form; and multi-ingredient formulations cannot be assumed to behave like any one component. Even when labels look similar, the interventions may not be clinically equivalent.

What borrowed science looks like

Borrowed science occurs when research conducted on one ingredient or formulation is presented as though it directly supports a different commercial product. Sometimes this is obvious. More often, broad claims are built from studies that used a different extract, dose or combination.

Background research can provide biological plausibility, but it is not the same as product-specific evidence.

Questions sponsors should ask

A defensible evidence programme begins by defining exactly what is being tested and how it relates to the marketed product.

  • Was the identical branded ingredient or finished formulation studied?
  • Are the species, plant part, extraction method and standardisation comparable?
  • Was the clinically studied dose used?
  • Is the product stable and manufactured consistently across batches?
  • Were the population, duration and outcomes relevant to the intended claim?
  • Was the trial independently conducted and fully reported?

Build an evidence chain that belongs to the product

Early analytical and mechanistic work can establish identity and plausibility. Well-designed human trials then test whether the specific intervention produces meaningful benefits in the intended population.

Product-specific research costs more than relying on adjacent literature, but it creates a far more durable scientific asset. It can support credible communication, inform future development and withstand closer scrutiny from scientists, clinicians, regulators and commercial partners.
